Dick and Vic in our Second Yard Concert

August 13, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 5:10 pm

A duo featuring entirely music for Highland bagpipes and keyboards, with Victor Zupanc, composer, music director for the Children’s Theater company, and fantastic keyboardist, and Dick Hensold, Highland Pipes.

The music will be centered around Dick’s extensive study into Cape Breton piping. (Cape Breton is at the Eastern end of Nova Scotia, settled 200 years ago by many thousands of Gaelic-speaking Scots. They preserve a very old style of playing said to come from Scotland’s Hebrides Islands.)  For years Dick had been looking for a local pianist that was willing to learn the very challenging traditional Cape Breton piano backup style, and the Covid winter of ‘20-’21 afforded Victor enough free time to delve into this.  Dick noticed this backup style had numerous American influences, and asked Victor, who as a theater musician has experience with many different keyboard styles, what elements he recognized that the Cape Bretoners incorporated into their Celtic music.  He replied, “A little Blues, but mainly boogie-woogie.”  So this program could be called either, “Traditional Cape Breton Piping”, or “Boogie Woogie Celtic”.

In addition to Cape Breton tunes with traditional piano backup, the program will also include pipes and organ arrangements and classics, folk-rock style originals, pipes-and-harp arrangements of old favorites, etc.  It’s pretty fun!   The concert lasts about 70 minutes.
