Patrick Linehan: Minnesota’s First Uilleann Piper
Minneapolis newspapers called Patrick J. Linehan (1869-1938) “the only known player of Irish bagpipes in the twin cities” who possessed the “only set of Irish pipes in the northwest.” The New York City-born son of piper Edward Linehan from north County Cork, Patrick Linehan came to Minnesota as an infant, broke log jams in northern Minnesota, survived the Great Hinckley Fire and did time in prison before appearing on stage in 1915 at showings of the silent film Ireland: A Nation and on Twin Cities radio throughout the 1920s. Library Director Brian Miller will share new findings about the life and music of Linehan, whose William Rowsome set of uilleann pipes is still played in the Twin Cities by Tom Dahill.
