The Abbey Theatre and Irish Cultural Nationalism
Join Dr. Elizabeth Stack, Celtic Junction Art Center’s Director of Education, Twin Cities-based theatre director Michelle Schwantes, and Dr. Steven Griffith, former chair of the theatre and dance department at Gustavus Adolphus College, for a panel discussion of the role Dublin’s Abbey Theatre played in the rise of cultural nationalism in Ireland.
At the turn of the 20th century, the Abbey’s founders, W.B. Yeats, Lady Augusta Gregory, and J.M. Synge were struggling to find and express the “true” Ireland. How well did they succeed, what role did the Abbey play in developing our view of Ireland, and what are the challenges for theatre artists today as they respond to our difficult times? The panelists will address these questions and more. After the conversation, the floor will be open for questions. REGISTER HERE for this free, online webinar.
